Moving Marble

“Moving Marble” is a triptych of animated gifs exploring the relationships between florentines and the countless statues that decorate the city. The three fictional statues depicted represent three of the most common subject matters for such sculptures. The biblical subject matter is represented by the madonna and child greeting passerbys, the mythological subject is represented by Bacchus enjoying aperitivo with a local, and the allegorical subject matter depicts a representation of the City of Florence providing shade from the brutal sun. One of the things that struck me the most about Florence was how omnipresent statues felt, seemingly located everywhere around the city. In many of these cases, the detail in the statues create an uncanny lifelikeness that implies that the statues could come to life at any minute. For this project, I decided to take that concept a bit further, and use animation to imagine what statues come to life might look like.
