Saintly: Christian Women in Early Modern Europe
“Saintly” was held at the UWM Mathis Gallery from April 11, 2024 through May 9, 2024.
This exhibition explored the relationship between canonized women from the Catholic faith and women practitioners in early modern Europe. By observing depictions of the holy women from the time, viewers can gain a more in-depth understanding of how women engaged with religious material and saw themselves in such works. The exhibition included prints, paintings, sculptures, and books. Objects were provided by the UWM Art Collection, UWM Special Collections, the Wright Art Museum at Beloit College, and the Haggerty Museum at Marquette University.
I conceived the show, conducted the research, wrote the catalogue and labels, installed and deinstalled the show, and managed the object loans. As a designer, I also created all of the promotional material for the exhibition including the catalogue cover, the poster, and the logo for the show.
On the opening night of the exhibition, I gave a curator’s talk about the concept behind the show and my work putting the exhibition together. Close to 100 people attended the opening night reception and the overall attendance for the four-week exhibition surpassed 400 people—an incredible number for a small gallery with a limited run.
